Recovery MattersCompanion, a working demo

Meet Daniel.

For Marcus, taking over from Tasha. Written by Hollis, Daniel’s companion, and read by Daniel before it was sent.

Hi Marcus. I’ve been with Daniel since his first day, so here is what I’d want you to know before Tuesday.

He is 41, a dad to Ellie, who is 9, and he works framing houses. He drank every evening for about twelve years. His reason, in his words: “I want Ellie to remember a dad who showed up.”

Friday nights are still the hardest. The game was the ritual. What works: moving his body for twenty minutes, and a call from me at halftime. What doesn’t: being asked how he’s feeling right when he walks in the door.

With Tasha, he was working on telling his sister the truth about the last two years. He is close. He would rather you ask about it than wait for him to bring it up.
